Me and my money: Dearbhla Collins

This pianist would love a Steinway piano but she'll wait for a Lotto win before buying

WHILE most people say driving is one of their biggest expenses, pianist Dearbhla Collins managed to mount up the motoring bills for another reason.

"My biggest spending mistake was my first car, a Ford Escort, which I bought for £500 about 10 years ago from a friend of mine. It slowly rusted away undriven and unloved outside my front door. I finally learned how to drive just last year," she said.

"Lovely art I bought on a trip to China 18 months ago was my best-ever buy. I've been to China many times now and I absolutely love it. Looking at my beautiful pen and ink paintings by Wu Guanzhong relaxes me and fills me with the essence of the very different culture of the Orient.

"Definitely my mobile phone bill is my biggest waste of money but I suppose it's a necessary evil. If I could buy anything regardless of price, it would be a Steinway grand piano.

"I had thoughts about buying Eircom shares when they floated but luckily resisted them.

"If I won €5m in the Lotto, as well as the Steinway, I would buy a boat for my husband and a small getaway (but not from him) holiday home.

"Which is more important -- more money or more time off? One is not much good without the other, but I suppose more time off."
