Diesel prices rocket to same level as petrol
THE cost of diesel has rocketed in recent weeks and a litre now costs the same as petrol.
Price comparison website pumps.ie said yesterday a litre of petrol and diesel both now cost an average of 147.9c.
The AA's monthly fuel price index for November showed that petrol was almost five cents more expensive than diesel just two weeks ago.
AA spokesman Conor Faughnan last night said the higher prices were "odd" and "something of a mystery".
"It's normal at this time of year for the gap between the two fuels to narrow because demand rises and diesel is essentially home heating oil.
"Diesel prices are high across Europe. One theory is because Germans -- who are the biggest users of home heating oil in Europe -- are filling their tanks and when they start, the prices rise."
