It is the biggest shopping day of the year, overtaking Christmas, and with Black Friday set to get consumers buying with gusto, retailers are already offering massive discounts.

Stores around the country are promoting deals of up to 50pc off in the run-up to Black Friday later this week.

While electronics were traditionally the focus of the November sale, retailers are now slashing the prices of everything from fashion and beauty to toys and furniture.

Traditionally an American concept, Thomas Burke, director of Retail Ireland, said Black Friday sales were now "a necessity" for retailers here if they want to attract customers, with the sales window growing from one day to a fortnight.

Argos began its sale last week and will run through to Cyber Monday on November 27 with tech and gaming expected to be most popular.

CEO John Rogers said last year's Black Friday was "the biggest and most successful shopping day ever for Argos" with the store seeing the largest amount of online traffic in its history in the first few hours. He said the chain had been preparing for "many months" for this year's sale.

"Black Friday and Cyber Monday have definitely changed how people shop for Christmas, with many using it for the initial burst of gift buying in the festive season," he said.

Currys PC World is predicting a 15pc increase in Black Friday sales this year. Last year it saw orders placed every eight seconds on the day. It predicts the hottest sales will be TVs, laptops, Nespresso machines and the Dyson Supersonic hairdryer. It's Black Tag Event runs from today until December 5.

CEO of Harvey Norman Ireland Blaine Callard said the Black Friday sale was now busier than Christmas for the chain. It expects to sell more than 10,000 laptops and tablets, 8,000 big screen TVs, 5,000 coffee machines, and more than 9,000 sets of headphones and speakers.

Other stores offering discounts include DID Electrical. Mothercare, Boots, Littlewoods Ireland and Debenhams.

However, while the sales are good news for shoppers, Retail Ireland warned they are having a detrimental affect on Irish retailers. Mr Burke said the sale offered no boost to Irish businesses and was simply taking from the Christmas market.

He said shops discounting so heavily at a time when many do up to 30pc of their year's trade was challenging.
