Stylishly safe on the road

There are four different styles to choose from of these adult cycle helmets on offer at Lidl from today. They're the classic rounded shape that is more associated with skateboarding than bicycling but is still more than suitable for both, and they come in two sizes (S/M-L/XL). Priced at just €14.99, they're a savvy buy for any age group and the funky patterns will certainly make you stand out on the road. See www.lidl.ie or in stores for details.

Make a splash on Lough Ree

There are very few outdoor waterparks in Ireland, much less a waterpark that holds a Guinness World Record. So claim Baysports, located on Lough Ree, beside the Hodson Bay Hotel in Athlone, which boasts the largest inflatable floating water slide in the world. The Round Tower slide stands 12.6m high out of the water and is connected to the largest inflatable waterpark in Ireland. It has to be seen to be believed. Prices are a very reasonable €10 per hour for children 14 and under, and €15 per hour for everybody over the age of 15. Visit www.baysports.ie for further information. They also offer Summer Water Camps for the budget price of €35 per child per day which might sound expensive but the itinerary is impressive for that price.

Weather-proof family time

If that burst of Leaving Cert weather is the height of our summer this year I'll be making a bee-line to the cinema at least once this week. Odeon Cinema has an excellent family deal right now, although it must be ordered online and isn't available to purchase at the desk. Costing €33 for a family of four, it includes four cinema tickets (2D only), a regular popcorn, two regular drinks, and two kids' mix packs. Considering regular tickets for two adults and two children can cost as much as €42.50 without the food and drink, this is a bargain. Well worth checking out. For more information visit www.odeoncinemas.ie.

Budget BBQ

Iceland, who opened their newest store last week in Clonmel, have a very popular grill pack for those on a budget which offers plenty of meat for your buck. The 'cook from frozen' 30-piece barbecue selection includes chicken legs, sausages and burgers, and costs €7 for the entire pack. If we do get some sunshine it might be worth having on standby in the freezer. See www.iceland.ie for your closest store.

Don't forget to Leap

Just to remind you that the special offer of a 24-hour family Leap card for €10, which gives you unlimited travel in the Dublin area for a family of two adults and up to four children, is still available from www.leapcard.ie. You can order a maximum of two cards, and they are valid up until the 31st December 2016. These special cards were commissioned to encourage families to make the most of the 1916 commemorations and offer brilliant value. While you're there, order a child Leapcard for any member of your family that doesn't have one already. It'll entitle them to free travel for two weeks between 25th July and 7th August next, giving you plenty of opportunities to explore the city on a budget.
