Objects of Desire with Marian Keyes
The celebrated author tells Andrea Smith about her favourite purchases
I'm obsessed with skincare. I've been using SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2 (€136) and Resveratrol night-time antioxidant (€140, TheSkinShopDirect.ie) since the start of the year and I'm convinced it's a miracle sauce. It's the first time I've ever used only one brand, and I love what it's doing to my clob.
Percy Pigs (€2.29, M&S) are the most enjoyable eating experience I've ever had. I love the spin-offs - Reversy Percys, Percy Pig and Pals, and the new one where Percy is gone on his holidays and one of the other beasts is cola-flavoured!
The enormous inequalities between rich and poor in our world buckles me with powerlessness, and my monthly standing order to Concern (Concern.net/donate) is one small way of feeling like I'm making a difference. I'd prefer not to say the amount because it's only a drop in the ocean of need, but it makes life more bearable for me.
I was in Bath at a literary festival and stumbled across the Chanii B boutique, which was packed to the rafters with beautiful shoes. I bought these 'Honey' pink ponyskin shoes (€234, ChaniiBShoes.com) and I adore them. Just look at them. Aren't they gorgeous? They have heels that are high but not too high, because while a shortarse like me needs a bit of height, I also need to be able to walk. I'm looking forward to the weather being warm enough to wear them.
I'm all about family, and a clatter of Keyesez went away to a villa in Umbria the summer before last, which was so dolce vita, it even had its own vegetable garden. We ate our heads off and all got on great, and we're hoping to go back next year. (Villa Lavanda, sleeps 12, €1,200-€2,000 per week, Vista su Todi, sleeps 4, €1,000-€1,5,00, VillaInUmbria.com).
My car is a light blue Fiat 500 (from €13,450 new, Fiat.ie). I've had it for five years and I love it. It looks cute and pretty, just like a mobile handbag. It gets me to where I need to go so it's a great friend to me, and it's nice and small so it's handy for parking.
I love books, and my 'to-be-read' pile takes up most of one wall in my bedroom. Some books I've enjoyed recently include Bernice Barrington's Sisters and Lies (€17.99), Kit de Waal's My Name is Leon (€17.40), Kate Beaufoy's Another Heartbeat in the House (€12.65), and Jane Fallon's latest, Strictly Between Us (€12.65, Easons.com). Reading was always, and still is, a pleasure, but I can sort of fob myself off and tell myself I'm working now - keeping an eye on the competition!
How to get Marian's favourite things on a smaller budget
Ireland's Twitter Queen knows the value of good skincare, and we love the Pai range as it has been formulated with sensitive and allergy-prone skin in mind. The Pai Lotus and Orange Blossom BioAffinity Tonic (€36, PaiSkincare.com) is great for hydrating and protecting dry, mature skin.
If, like our Marian, you love quirky, colourful shoes, they definitely don't come much quirkier than these fabulous White Rabbit shoes from Irregular Choice's Alice in Wonderland range (€211, Schuh.ie). Just for Gawd's sake, don't fall down a rabbit-hole when you're wearing them!
If you're also a fan of Italy, why not visit Rimini (one week half-board, Hotel Belvedere Mare, €1,598 for two, Topflight.ie) on July 3rd. This is the perfect occasion for Marian to wear those fab Chanii B shoes, as it's the magical night when the Adriatic Riviera celebrates its annual summer festival called La Notte Rosa or Pink Night.
Marian loves Percy, and we confess to being rather partial to the Natural Confectionery Co's Jelly Snakes (€1.85, Centra.ie). They've no artificial colours or flavours, and we're so glad St Patrick didn't drive them out of Ireland too.
Marian's new book 'Making It Up As I Go Along' is out now (€14.99). Her Irish royalties are going to the Save the Children Syria fund.
