Objects of Desire: Mario Rosenstock
The popular mimic and creator of Gift Grub tells Andrea Smith about his favourite purchases
I do a good bit of Crossfit training and I love the Reebok Crossfit Nano trainers (Reebok.ie, €85) as they're very light and really multi-purpose. I train with the fantastic Dominic Munnelly at CrossFit Green in Stillorgan. I find Crossfit great as it has solved my knee problems for playing tennis. When it comes to footwear, I also have a thing for silver shoes, particularly the Hugo Boss silver trainers (€180) I bought last year.
Tennis has been my game since I was 10 and I use a couple of Head rackets (Head GrapheneXT Instinct MP racket, €155, Rackets.ie). I'm not good at staying still, but playing tennis is a great way for me to relax and clear my head.
My eight-year old son Dash loves Shane Hegarty's books, like the new one Darkmouth (Easons.com, €11.05). He's a prolific reader, so you'll often find me buying books for him. He also loves Match Attax football cards, so if I leave the house, I have to come back with a packet. Thankfully they only cost a euro!
For the recording of my RTÉ TV show, in one day I can go from being Marty Morrissey, which requires a black wig and a huge amount of tan, to Enda Kenny, to Miriam O'Callaghan with a blonde wig and full-on triple eyelashes and eyeliner. My face gets ravaged, so Dermalogica moisture intensive face masques (KudosBeauty.ie, €36.88) have become part of my life. You'll see me going around the house in my dressing gown and a white face at night, which is freaky.
I always have my Bose QuietComfort 25 noise-cancelling headphones (€299.95, Bose.ie) with me, as when I finish recording the daily Gift Grub sketch for The Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show on Today FM, I give it over to two fantastic engineers, Caroline and Emily. They work their magic and send it to me for approval, so I have to listen whether I'm with my kids, on the golf course or at the pool.
At this time of year, I can be gone from 6am to 11pm. The best way of making up to my wonderful wife Blathnaid is a bouquet of her favourite flowers, Bird of Paradise and lilies (€40, Blackrock Flowers). It makes my slither through the door a little easier.
I don't have a car, so I put absolutely everything I have to bring with me into my leather Prada bag (Brown Thomas ,€2,250) every day. I bought mine in the Prada store in Tenerife for around €2k, and yes they're expensive, but I invest big in them because they last for years. I get a bit of stick for carrying my man bag around, and the last person to slag me was Louis Walsh, who spotted it was a Prada bag from about 30 paces. He said that while he's a Gucci man himself, he loves Prada too.
How to get Mario's favourite things on a smaller budget
Mario may rock his Prada bag, but for those who are looking for a man bag that's a little more affordable, check out the River Island men's range. This black satchel is only €47 from RiverIsland.com, and is perfect to carry around the essentials of a guy's daily life - which in Mario's case includes eyelashes!
Male or female, we all need to look after our skin especially in the winter. The Botanics Men's Clay Mask (100ml, €9.99, Boots.ie) might be a good solution to Mario's stressed-out skin. The only thing is that it's so good, his wife Blathnaid just might want to nick it from him for herself.
We know he likes silver shoes and trainers, so maybe Mario might be taken with these Puma Men's Sequence trainers in black and silver (€27.96, MandMdirect.ie). Perfect for our favourite funny guy to slip into after a day spent hobbling around on set in Joan Burton and Miriam O'Callaghan's high heels!
Mario says Blathnaid has the patience of a saint and knows that his life sometimes goes mental. We're sure she'd like this Chocolate Pizazz wine and chocolates gift set to go along with those lovely flowers (€43, Chocolate Garden.ie).
