Car tax renewal is one to put on hold

AVOID trying to renew your motor tax after a bank holiday weekend or at the beginning of a month. Otherwise, you face waits of 20 minutes or more to get through to the Department of Transport's motor tax helpline in Shannon – if you can get through at all.

This paper rang that helpline after being contacted by readers who were anxious to renew their motor tax – but who couldn't get through. After calling the helpline on a number of occasions earlier this month, and waiting at least 20 minutes each time, we gave up trying to get through.

When asked why there was such a delay answering calls, a spokeswoman for the department said: "A particularly high number of enquiries are received at the beginning of each month coinciding with motor tax renewals.

"This situation places the telephone system under considerable stress and is more acute after a holiday weekend. As part of a process of continuous improvement we are working with our service providers to ensure..."

At that stage we hung up.
