Thee owners of a new Irish cream liqueur plan to expand the business into the US market and are eyeing a new whiskey product.

Five Farms Liqueur, backed by US-based McCormick Distilling chief Mick Harris and drinks industry veteran Johnny Harte, has secured a distribution deal with O'Brien's wines.

The product, which retails at €35, uses dairy produce from five farms across Co Cork. It contains 10pc triple-distilled Irish whiskey, which is higher than the industry norm.

Harris said that the Irish cream category had great potential but had "grown stale".

"Irish whiskey content in Five Farms is a key element of the Five Farms brand and we are obviously aware of the current success of Irish whiskey so the category is of keen interest to us," he said.

"We do have ideas on developing brands in the Irish whiskey category and will enter the market when we believe we have the right brand delivery to fit our portfolio."
