The new managing director of Virgin Media Television, Paul Farrell, has criticised RTÉ for availing of the Covid Wage Subsidy Scheme and claimed it should instead manage its costs.
RTÉ last week outlined its financial difficulties to the Oireachtas Special Committee on Covid-19 Response.
"Virgin Media is not availing of the Government's wage-subsidy scheme, even though we operate in an identical environment to RTÉ. To counter the economic threat of Covid, we have carefully managed the limited financial and operational resources available to our TV business," said Farrell.
RTÉ has not outlined how many employees are being suppoRTÉd by the scheme, although it is understood some staff have come off the scheme recently.
Farrell also criticised RTÉ for failing to outline in its submission the "millions of euro" of savings made due to halting filming of shows such as Fair City.
A spokesman for RTÉ said: "As with all media organisations in Ireland and elsewhere, RTÉ revenues, both commercial and from the TV Licence, have been severely impacted by the Covid-19 crisis." He said several steps had been taken to mitigate this.
