Virgin Media TV is seeking judgment for €2.5m against Eir over an alleged failure to honour an arrangement for the broadcast of sports channels.

Virgin Media claims in its action against Eircom Ltd, trading as Eir, that both sides entered into an agreement in 2019 for the distribution of sports broadcasts.

Virgin Media claims the deal meant Eir would pay it €6m between the end of 2019 and 2021.

Virgin Media said Eir paid €1m plus Vat in December 2019 but €2.5m plus Vat due to be paid on July 1 last remains outstanding. It says Eir is in breach of contract.

Virgin Media claims that last August Eir asked to discuss the payment in light of the reduced Champions League and Europa League seasons due to Covid19.

In mid-August Virgin Media pulled it sport media channels from Eir’s TV service and Eir then removed Eir Sports 1 from Virgin Media’s service.

Eir denies that it has breached the agreements. It says Virgin Media breached the agreements, a claim rejected by Virgin.

The case was admitted to the fast-track Commercial Court on Monday.
