Radio chief talks on tech firm threat
The chairwoman of the country's biggest independent radio group will this week meet Communication Minister Denis Naughton to voice concerns about the vulnerability of the sector to technology firms like Facebook and Google and potential new competition at home.
The chair of Communicorp, Lucy Gaffney, whose stations include Today fm, Newstalk, Spin and 98fm, sharply criticised the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) in June after it unexpectedly threw the market open for new entrants. The BAI licenses broadcasters, and has invited offers from stations interested in setting up in national or local markets. In response, Communicorp called for an independent economic evaluation of the radio sector, and sought the meeting with Mr Naughten, to discuss regulation and funding.
