The group representing Ireland's national newspapers has appointed Ann Marie Lenihan as its first chief executive officer.

NewsBrands Ireland made the appointment following a strategic review of the organisation by its management committee.

Ms Lenihan has worked with the newspaper industry for over 20 years, including most recently as communications and public affairs manager at NewsBrands Ireland, which was previously known as National Newspapers of Ireland (NNI).

She was responsible for directing all of the industry body's key initiatives and events, and managing all public policy.

"We are delighted to announce the appointment of Ann Marie Lenihan as ceo of NewsBrands Ireland," said NewsBrands chairman Vincent Crowley.

"She brings a depth of experience to the role and a palpable enthusiasm for promoting the newspaper industry," he said.

"She understands the unique needs of newspaper publishers and is highly respected by people working in NewsBrands Ireland's client companies and in Irish media generally," he added.

"I am excited to lead NewsBrands Ireland in this period when news media is developing and growing," Ann Marie Lenihan said.
