An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has taken fifth spot in Fortune’s 40 under 40 most influential young people in the world.

The top spot was taken by French President Emmanuel Macron, with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg taking the second spot.

Completing the top five were Cheng Wei and Jean Liu, leaders of Uber in China, and Brian Chesky, Nathan Blecharczyk, Joe Gebbia from accommodation sharing website Airbnb.

In its annual ranking of the most influential young people in business, Mr Varadkar is described by Fortune as Ireland’s "youngest leader in centuries," while Ireland is described as a "devoutly Catholic country".

In addition Fortune says that "many are rooting for his success."

Other notable people on the list include tennis star Serena Williams and Chicago native Chance.

Interestingly the list comes in a week when an Irish student on a J1 was left feeling embarrassed after she didn’t recognise Taoiseach Leo Varadkar when he came into her Chicago restaurant...
