Irish media environment 'buoyant, diverse and competitive' - report

The media environment here is “buoyant and competitive” as well as “diverse”, according to a new report.

Developments in Ireland include a restructuring at Independent News & Media as part of its digital first strategy with Independent.ie the most popular private sector source of online news, according to research from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism.

The research, prepared for the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, showed that State-owned RTE dominates in both digital and traditional news markets.

And the way the news is being digested is also changing with one in three people saying they now use smartphones to keep up to date.

While 71pc of the population is interested in news, only 46pc say they trust it, the research also showed.

The launch of UTV Ireland in January and Irish TV, which is aimed at viewers abroad, means the television sector has undergone the most dramatic changes of any media segment, this year, it added.

National news is the central interest followed by international, according to the report while researchers found a lower level of engagement with local news.
