INM chief Rae joins World Editors Forum
Independent News and Media Editor-in-Chief Stephen Rae has joined the board of the World Editors Forum.
The forum represents editors and CEOs in 3,000 news and tech organisations in 120 countries.
"I am delighted to join the board at such a critical time as media finds new revenue streams and takes advantage of the online revolution. The board will also be looking at how media can monetise our content which is now driving a lot of the audience for the tech giants," Rae said.
"The phenomenon of fake news which became apparent during the US presidential election further underpins the value of trusted and verified news sources like our own organisation and Irish media generally. It shows how important real journalism is in protecting democracies and holding those in power to account."
Among the media groups represented on the WEF board are the Street.com, Singapore Press Holdings, Times Media Ltd, La Stampa, Toronto Star, Suddeutsche Zeitung, Dainik Jagran (India), Hurriyet (Turkey), Zero Hora (Brazil), VG (Norway) and the International Centre for Journalists.
WEF executive director Cherilyn Ireton said: "Stephen joins the board at a critical time. Trust in journalism, already challenged, is being further undermined by fake news, misinformation and the financial pressures on newsrooms.
"We believe Stephen will be a positive and creative voice on the board."
Rae, who is Group Editor-in-Chief at Independent News & Media (INM), oversees the group's print and digital titles including Independent.ie, the Irish Independent, Sunday Independent, Sunday World and The Herald.
He recently received the Award for Business & Leadership from Cranfield University's strategic directors programme.
