Gretchen Friemann has joined Independent News & Media as senior business correspondent.
The appointment marks Friemann's return to Ireland after a six-year stint in Australia where she worked as mergers and acquisitions editor at The Australian, the country's best-selling national broadsheet.
During her time there she played a key role in expanding the newspaper's business section, spearheading coverage of multi-billion dollar mergers as well as initial public offerings and debt market deals. Prior to that she worked in a number of roles at the Australian Financial Review, Australia's pre-eminent business newspaper, including as senior business writer and Street Talk editor, a long-running and influential corporate finance column.
She began her career in business journalism in Ireland at the Sunday Business Post and wrote for the Irish Times for close to five years, where she revealed how AIB took control of a blue chip real estate portfolio once owned by the convicted fraudster, Achilleas Kallakis.
