Ferguson goes head to head with Cooper for top business book
Former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson and broadcaster Matt Cooper are vying for the crown of best-selling business book this Christmas, according to Eason.
Eason marketing head Brendan Corbett told the Sunday Independent that Ferguson's book about management, Leading, co-authored with high-profile venture capitalist Michael Moritz, has been the best seller so far, followed by Cooper's biography of Tony O'Reilly, with Alan Sugar's book Unscripted in third.
Overall, Corbett said there was a stronger range of titles across different genres this year.
"Last year was probably dominated by sports titles, whereas this year you've a much broader array of titles that have appealed to a lot more people.
"The likes of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, David Walliams, the Guinness Book of Records, Ross O'Carroll-Kelly - they will be the books that will perform very well for us, and are already performing very well for us, and they have a track record that they're out every year.
"Other titles that are going to be top sellers this year would include the likes of the Jim McGuinness autobiography, which is getting a lot of coverage... Irelandopedia, that's a bit of a sleeper... and then the likes of Cecilia Ahern".
Corbett said Eason expects sales to spike for Cyber Monday.
Other trends the company has noticed is down to the rise of the 'vlogger', with books by YouTube stars Zoella, Alfie Deyes and Marcus Butler selling well, and a move towards healthy eating.
Corbett also said there was a greater-than-usual interest in Irish history at this time of year, boosted by the centenary of the 1916 Rising, with books by Sunday Independent columnist Gene Kerrigan and historian Tim Pat Coogan driving sales - but many more titles will appear.
Corbett said Eason expects its sales to grow this year compared with last year. Last year it trebled its sales on Cyber Monday compared with the previous year, when it didn't promote the day. Cyber Monday is the company's busiest online sales day of the year.
In the retail sector more generally, Retail Excellence Ireland is expecting a spike in menswear sales, sparked by UFC fighter Conor McGregor.
