Lyons's tech beginnings pay off

THE PUNT is hoarse from encouraging young people to study computer science – programmers are the billionaires of tomorrow.

Veteran technologist Garry Lyons is a perfect example. Already Mastercard's "chief innovation officer", he has just been appointed to the board of booming Irish travel software company Datalex as a non-executive director.

Mr Lyons boasts a wealth of experience from some of the world's most interesting tech initiatives. He is head of Mastercard labs and runs its global research and development arm, working on bringing new payment services to market with greater speed than before.

Prior to his appointment at Mastercard, he was the chief executive officer of Orbiscom, the payment solutions provider to the financial services industry, whose customers include some of the largest financial institutions in the world such as Citibank, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and PayPal.

Mr Lyons's career had its early shoots in Dublin City University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in computer applicatons. Think carefully when picking your CAO choices, kids. Techies will inherit the earth.
