We live in the information era, where everyone from interns right up to the CEO needs to know how to use technology as part of their jobs.

It doesn’t matter what sector you work in. Whether it’s healthcare, marketing, media, hospitality or fundraising you will need certain technical skills to be successful.

Here are just some of the skills that tech candidates will need to secure employment today, and to stay relevant in the future. Some of them may just surprise you.

Cybersecurity know-how

Cybersecurity is one of those buzzwords that you hear thrown around in relation to GDPR. However, it is becoming a massive issue for tech companies as threats become more sophisticated and more damaging. In the future, there will be an increased need for excellence in cybersecurity, as companies ensure they are fully protecting the data that they capture.

Experience with AI

Artificial intelligence has become a huge player in the global tech scene. It has changed how we shop, date and look after our health, and it looks like it is here to stay. Because AI is a relatively new development, the area is seriously understaffed, especially at the leadership level. Employees who gain these skills now will undoubtedly benefit from them in the future.


Data knowledge

Data is everything in technology. Every single thing that a person does online is data and therefore can be mined and used to inform the decisions that you make. Expert tech candidates know how to read and analyse this information in order to help their company to progress.

HTML and web UI skills

Businesses need attractive and easy to use websites in order to gain customers. As a result, experience in HTML will help you get your foot in the door at a lot of companies. Other skills like CSS and JavaScript programming are an added bonus.

Growth mindset

Technology and markets change rapidly. Ideas are scrapped, projects are pushed through and goalposts change daily. It’s a fast-paced environment that requires adaptability and a good attitude.

The ideal tech candidate will have a growth mindset i.e. they will be forward-thinking and open to change. They will always be looking for ways to improve and won’t be happy sticking with the status quo, just because it is easier.

Communication skills

Technology teams don’t just hide behind their computers typing code and avoiding eye contact. Today, employers want tech candidates who can collaborate and communicate effectively with other teams in their office and around the world. They are looking for real team players who are willing to discuss ideas.


Critical thinking

Critical thinking is another soft skill that many employers are seeking. They need candidates who are curious and like to solve problems. To do this you need to be proactive. Ask yourself what can you do to improve their business? Can you implement new systems or perhaps scrap old ideas? It’s this kind of critical thinking that could ultimately land you a tech job.

Time management

Despite all the amazing advances that have happened in our workplaces some things stay the same. Time management is still a key skill that candidates need to possess. It is very easy to underestimate the amount of time a project will take. The inability to manage time effectively has a negative impact on the whole team. Being able to schedule and prioritise tasks is crucial, especially when faced with pressing deadlines.
