Yahoo has appointed Pat Scully to head up its Dublin-based European operation, the internet giant confirmed to the Sunday Independent.

The global email and web content giant recently relocated its EMEA operations to Ireland.

Yahoo had advertised the position and Mr Scully was hired last month. He previously led the international sales operations in Europe for Nasdaq-listed software business Nuance Communications, which has its international HQ in Dublin.

"The appointment is in line with the expansion in Dublin which we announced here last year," Yahoo said.

Mr Scully is from Galway and has a wide range of sales and operations experience in technology.

Scully reports to the chief financial officer of Yahoo's US headquarters in Sunnyvale, California. The rest of Yahoo's recently appointed Irish board have accountancy backgrounds. Yahoo's main activities in Ireland are described as being based around finance operations, pricing, sales and marketing.

Yahoo, which prefers to stay below the radar in Ireland, was close to a €20m deal to buy Galway-based Sindice late last year, but the deal appears to have fallen through.
