Watchdog yet to decide on probe into Bord Gais over service costs
THE Competition Authority has yet to decide whether to probe a complaint by an independent contractor group against Bord Gais. The Association of Plumbing and Heating Contractors of Ireland (APHCI) said yesterday that consumers were being "ripped off" when they used Bord Gais services contractor Sierra. Bord Gais has denied the claim.
The APHCI cited a Consumer Association survey from last month that showed consumers can be charged significantly more by Bord Gais than by other contractors. Bord Gais signed a deal in 2010 worth up to €65m with Sierra, which is part of the Siteserv group that businessman Denis O'Brien recently agreed to buy for €45m.
Sierra is the sole services provider for the gas firm for installations and maintenance of Bord Gais domestic boilers.
