This one-bed cottage may hold the distinction of being Ireland's cheapest house after being snapped up for just €15,000.

The Roscommon property measures just over 500 square feet and also offers off-street parking and a large garden to the rear.

It was sold last February at an Allsops auction for just €15,000 - not much more than the €10,571 it takes to keep the average family car on the road for a single year. At the same auction several houses sold for over €300,000.

Allsop director of auctioneers Robert Hoban said: "This would be a bit of an anomaly, but if people decide that that's what it's worth, that's its market value.

"We do get properties like that into us where they can't sell locally. Generally what happens is they would have tried the market first and then come to us, they would have potentially got more than they would have on the open market.

The average price of a house nationwide is now roughly €200,000, up almost €30,000 this year.
