Trevor Bowen, the accountant and business adviser to rock band U2, has emerged as an investor in hot Dublin start-up Soundwave.

Mr Bowen, a 16-year veteran with Principle Management, which was set up by U2 manager Paul McGuinness, is the latest investor in the company, along with Mark Cuban, the billionaire owner of the NBA's Dallas Mavericks, as well as ACT Venture Capital and others.

Brendan O'Driscoll, the 25-year-old chief executive of Soundwave said: "We launched Soundwave about three weeks ago on Android and iPhone and have been blown away by the explosive growth – we're closing in on 200,000 downloads already, and have tracked over four million songs."

Mr O'Driscoll confirmed Mr Bowen was an investor in the company, which has raised $1.5m to date. "We're happy to report that Trevor invested in Soundwave – but don't see the need to give the exact breakdown just yet," he said.

Mr O'Driscoll said Soundwave had been downloaded in 190 countries, and the US, the UK and Brazil were its biggest markets since launch.

"Our first user in Equatorial Guinea joined the app today [Friday] – which we are very proud of," he added.

Soundwave was founded by Mr O'Driscoll, Aidan Sliney, 28, and Craig Watson, 29, and its music discovery, sharing and analytics app has earned plaudits from Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak.

Soundwave is free for its users but it hopes to generate revenue from the music industry, which is interested in finding out which songs are played most and where.

"We've been inundated with requests from the industry for access to the data – so we're excited about moving forward on that front," Mr O'Driscoll said.

"At the same time, we're looking forward to continuing rollout updates to the app to increase the number of streaming apps that it can support and strengthen integrations with other platforms such as Twitter.
