Trinity is top Irish university for employability, says global index

The index ranks the world's top 150 universities in terms of their graduates' employability.

Trinity ranked 110th in the world and 53rd in Europe for employability.

The university's provost, Patrick Prendergast, said the ranking puts Trinity among the best universities in the world. He said the college is "delivering for Ireland at the highest international levels".

"To ensure Ireland's economic recovery continues, and to build a stronger society, we need to invest in higher education where the conditions for new enterprise and participatory citizenship are forged by our graduates," Dr Prendergast said.

"With the youngest demographic in Europe, Ireland is ideally placed to create a new generation of job creators and engaged global citizens. The latest ranking attests to the quality of a Trinity education which places student-centred learning at the heart of our academic mission."

The rankings were compiled by surveying what 4,500 recruiters from major companies in 20 different countries are looking for in university systems round the world.

More than 55pc of the participants represented companies with in excess of 1,000 employees.

Irish employers were not included in the survey, so the results reflect international employability only.

The survey was conducted by the French HR consultancy Emerging and German polling institute Trendence.

It focused more on practical skills rather than academic achievement and R&D.

Irish universities have been on something of a slide in the rankings recently.

In the latest Times Higher Education Rankings, Trinity - Ireland's highest ranked university - fell to 138th place from 129th.
