THE prestigious London Speakers Bureau has become quite the refuge for Irish sports stars, television personalities, economists and business personalities.

Economists Stephen Kinsella and Alan Aherne – the former special adviser to the late Finance Minister Brian Lenihan – are listed among its stars, as well as RTE's Miriam O'Callaghan.

The Punt noticed that former ESB boss Padraig McManus is now also on the circuit.

A spokeswoman said Mr McManus had been with them for some time, but stressed that it has only been since he left his post at ESB. He is currently the chairman of Eircom.

On reading his profile, the Punt felt a little exhausted as it regaled us with details of how he led the sale of a tranche of ESB's power generation portfolio to Spain's Endesa in a "ground-breaking" deal with trade unions and directed the first private placement of a fundraising package in the US of €1.1bn on behalf of ESB.

Now, he's also on the Council of the Irish Management Institute and a board member of Business in the Community, having served on a number of other boards including the Economic and Social Research Institute of Ireland (ESRI) and The Conference Board of the US.

Phew. And then to remind us all that he has a soft heart, he has also led volunteer groups to Ghana to rebuild primary and secondary level Schools.

An interesting CV, and no doubt he has a few good stories to tell of his time at the helm of the semi-state energy company.
