TH€ PUNT: Malone's new takeover front

It comes as a bit of a relief to find that Ireland isn't the only euro country being staked out by US billionaires.

Not that we don't like the attention, but you wouldn't want to be shy what with the way the likes of Kennedy Wilson, Lone Star and Blackstone have been letting their eyes wander over our assets lately.

Now we're all for investment, but the Punt has to confess we were slightly relieved to see that the new castellan of the luxurious Humewood Castle in Co Wicklow is just as happy targeting value assets in Germany as picking up a bargain here.

The Irish-American founder and chairman of Liberty Global, John Malone, is thought to have spent €8m buying the neo-gothic pile earlier this year, but his latest European shopping trip is on an altogether grander scale.

The latest addition to the Wicklow social scene has just launched a takeover offer for Germany's biggest cable operator KDG which has a market cap of €5.6bn. His Liberty Global group recently snapped up Virgin Media in the UK.

Mr Malone though is no stranger to doing things on a grand scale. At home in the US he's the biggest single property owner in the entire country.
