Sweet success for mum with her novelty chocolate bars

AT throw-in time for today's All-Ireland semi-final, it won't just be sheep and cars that will be decked out in Dublin and Mayo colours.

Many GAA fans will also be tucking into chocolate bars decorated in blue and navy -- or green and red. The bars are among the range of jersey chocolate bars sold by the online speciality retailer, Maria's Little Wrappers.

Managing director Maria McNulty set up the company in 2009 -- shortly after her daughter's birthday party. She put together chocolate bars with her daughter's name and date of birth for the party and received orders for similar personalised novelties after it, prompting her to create www. mariaslittlewrappers.com.

She now sells personalised bottle openers, wine labels, chocolate coins, mini sweet jars, lollipops and badges -- as well as jersey chocolate bars in county colours.

"I also sell chocolate wedding invitations -- where the wrapper on the bar is the invitation," said McNulty. "I've sold a lot of Wonka bars for fundraising events -- where the golden ticket tells the holder what prize they've won."

McNulty says her firm's sales have more than doubled since 2010. "The recession doesn't hit sweets," she said.
