Turnover at BWG, the company that operates the Spar franchise in Ireland, rose 4.2pc to €1.5bn in the 12 months to the end of September according to results from its majority owner, the South Africa-based Spar Group.

The performance resulted in BWG contributing a 9.6pc increase in rand terms at the group's overall revenue for the period.

The South African group owns 80pc of BWG.
