Shoe sales on the rise as definite green shoots pop up throughout economy
Actress Anne Hathaway, who wore a pair of shoes by designer Giuseppe Zanotti at the Oscars last month, may well have something to do with the uplift in shoe sales in Ireland over the last year.
However, Finance Minister Michael Noonan probably views the 1 per cent increase in shoe sales as another sign that the Irish economy is returning to normal.
"Ireland is a country continuing to restore the damage done and returning to more 'normal' circumstances – albeit not without risks along the way," Mr Noonan told the Sunday Independent.
"We have had positive news recently – including the elimination of the promissory notes and IBRC, the recent sale of Irish Life, and the announcement of the end of the bank guarantee.
"These are all significant milestones on the way to our recovery," he said. "These financial milestones have been complemented by the latest employment figures, which were encouraging as they represented the first annual increase in employment recorded since 2008."
