Services sector edges higher buoyed by wholesale and retail trade

THE services sector edged higher last month buoyed by the wholesale and retail trade, according to the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

Official figures show the sector jumped 1.2pc in April compared with March, with an annual increase of 4.1pc.

The monthly services value index (MSI) monitors trends in output at current prices of enterprises in the non-financial traded services sector.

Wholesale and retail trade had the fastest growth at 3.3pc followed by administrative and support service activities at 1.6pc and transportation and storage at 0.6pc, compared with March.

Sectors which suffered contraction include accommodation and food services, down 3pc, information and communication which dropped 1.6pc and professional, scientific and technical activities which slipped 0.2pc.
