Ryanair passenger numbers grew by 17pc in January, with the airline reporting it carried over 8.7m passengers during the month.

Annual traffic rose by 15pc, while the company reported that planes were 90pc full in the first month of this year, an improvement of 2pc compared to the same month in 2016.

The airline said it had carried 118m passengers in the year to the end of January, and attributed the improving numbers to the companies “Always Getting Better” programme which was instigated by ceo Michael O’ Leary in 2014.
