RTE radio set to be overtaken by digital in 2015
RTE management expects that its online and digital operations will start to make more money than its radio business in the next three years as the Irish media sector goes through a series of massive transformations.
Internal forecasts indicate that the broadcaster's digital wing -- which has expanded to include the online player, merchandising and content sales, as well as the RTE.ie website -- will earn more than the €24m generated by radio by the end of 2015.
Major deals with the likes of online TV and video firms Netflix and Hulu to show RTE content have helped boost revenues at Montrose at a time when the broadcaster is slashing costs across the board.
RTE is also likely to unveil a new premium player for international viewers in the coming months. The diaspora will be able to tune into RTE shows, but will have to pay for some of them.
