The late John J Byrne, a native of Kerry and who was a friend of Charlie Haughey, was a property developer who made his money building ballrooms in London and office blocks and apartments in central Dublin and Ballsbridge. He also owned the Brandon Hotel in Kerry.

John J died in 2013 at the age of 94, and is survived by three sons and five daughters. Wife Ciara and John Jr, who are based in Ballsbridge, are directors of Santenay, a holding company for the property empire the family inherited.

Its 2017 accounts had accumulated profits of €176m, and properties, mainly in Dublin, valued at €247m, with €76m of borrowings.
