Media-shy horse breeder and businessman Frank Dunne is thought to own about a third of the Dunnes Stores supermarket and clothing retail group.

In late 2017, a €284m dividend was paid out from profits that had accumulated in the UK, ahead of the closure of its stores in Scotland and England. The business is believed to have a turnover of about €3.6bn and continues its move upmarket, bringing designer names on board to brand various product ranges, most recently Diarmuid Gavin to help sell plants and other garden products.

He lives on a stud farm in Co Kildare, and two years ago, bought the neighbouring stud, Ballymacoll - complete with 300 acres - for €8.15m.
