The Roche family dynasty initially made their money from cement, specifically the business that became CRH in the 1970s.
Toll roads, solar and wind energy as well as some water interests later saw them prosper again, with Tom being the biggest shareholder in NTR, which is now focused on wind farm developments. Some of its legacy energy assets have been sold off over the past year, netting the family about €8.5m based on a 38pc shareholding.
His wife Anne is one of the Doyle hotel family and owns 25pc of the Doyle Collection business. She has shared in more than €800m of dividends over the past decade. Son John runs the Cocu Kitchen restaurants on Dublin's Hatch Street and Baggot Street.
