Peter (79) and John Queally (81) set up Dawn Meats with their partner Dan Browne in 1980 and it has grown to be one of Europe's largest privately-owned companies. Dawn has about 20pc of the Irish beef market as well as a major European presence, including a 49pc stake in French company Elivia, which has a turnover of over €1bn. There is an option to increase the stake to 70pc in 2019.
The main company is unlimited and so does not file accounts, but back in 2006, sales topped €900m. Sales at their Arrow group were €499m in 2016, generating pre-tax profits of €37m, and there were €152m in shareholders' funds. Other assets in the family include a sewage treatment firm, the Glenpatrick Spring Water company, five-a-side football pitches, pet foods and commercial property.
