Publicity-shy Galway brothers Anthony (58), Padraig (57), Thomas (56) and Liam (52) Smyth run the fast-expanding Smyths toy group. They own 28 shops on the island of Ireland and 70 in the UK with several more in the pipeline. Sales in the UK now top 400m as the operation expands rapidly.
The Irish company is unlimited and does not have to file accounts but it's expected that sales are close to 100m. An attempt by US giant, Toys R Us, to take on the Irish market in late 2015 failed and the operation closed last year after a few months in business. The brothers own commercial properties, pubs and have invested in companies such as Barry O'Sullivan's Altocloud. They have also shared sizeable pay cheques including a 14.1m management fee in 2007.
