Galway native Bill Hughes founded the B&M Care Group, now one of the largest care home operators in the UK, in 1975. It now has 23 homes with 1,200 residents. The former carpenter grew up in the care system himself and only met his birth mother at the age of 52. B&M is a highly-profitable, asset-rich business. Turnover for the year to the end of September 2015 grew by 9pc to £36m (42m), pre-tax profits were up by 2pc to £8.8m (10.3m) while shareholders funds increased by 3pc to £66.6m (77.9m). As a result, we are increasing our estimate of his worth to 100m.
