Down pharmacist Tom Eakin (82) was so dissatisfied by the way a medical device was attached to one of his family members that he decided to see if he could do better himself.

Using a mixer from a local bakery he came up with a far more efficient type of glue that could be used to attach devices to wounds. It was the beginning of a whole new career. His TG Eakin has evolved to become one of the North's most innovative companies, generating pre-tax profits of €21.2m last year, along with a €14m dividend.
