Over 40 years, Donald (70) and Hilary Pratt (67) and later other members of their Wicklow-based family built up the Avoca Handweavers business into a top-end retail business, with 11 outlets.

The cakes were pretty good too. Sales hit €58m last year. After a lengthy period of courting, the company was sold to Aramark for a cool €60m. They owned 17pc of the business, with Simon, Ivan, Amanda and Vanessa holding the rest. Ivan bought back the wholesale fashion and homewares business.
