Retail legend colossus Quinn owned about 45pc of Superquinn, which was sold to developers for €420m in 2005. There was a fair bit of debt, so Dubliner Quinn (79) is likely to have made €135m before tax.
Quinn provides precise details of his investments to the Oireachtas every year because he's a long serving Senator for NUI. He's invested in a bunch of private equity funds and complex financial derivatives including the Atlanta Co-investment fund II and the Goldman Sachs Mount Kellett Access Corporate feeder fund.
These investments are for serious high rollers and there are about 20 of these funds. But Quinn has a lot of other interesting stakes, including a bit of Avolon, the Irish aviation leasing outfit for sold for €2.1bn last year, the Jurys Inns business and solar energy group Elgin. He's also emerged as an investor in the McCabe's wine emporium.
