Castleknock-born Farrell (38) failed to make the cut when Louis Walsh was putting together Boyzone. So he went off to Hollywood instead. A series of early hits including Minority Report and SWAT made good money but the $155m budget Oliver Stone epic Alexander fell off the screen, only making $48m.

While his 31 films have grossed €950m, it's been 13 years since he last headlined a movie that broke $100m at the US box office. But he's been a star turn in TV series True Detective and he'll appear in adaptation of JK Rowling's Fantastic Beasts later this year.

Farrell has a pad in Sandymount and during the boom bought 14 apartments - two-beds, mostly - in Spencer Dock, close to the IFSC, in the Gasworks scheme in Dublin 4 and in an apartment block near to the Dundrum Town Centre. Their values are improving but are still well under water. In 2006 he bought actor Tim Curry's house in Los Angeles for $4.3m.
