Mayoman Maloney (56) is one of the shrewdest investors in the technology sector and has made serious wedge from spotting the next big thing before anyone else. He made about €60m from the sale of Esat in 2000, and hooked up with venture capital group Benchmark, investing his money and theirs in hot start-ups. Bebo, Betfair and Figleaves all generated double-digit returns.

There are hugely valuable stakes in Openet and Globoforce too, all worth a serious multiple of the initial investment. More recently, Maloney's punts included red-hot prospects Jobbio and Wholeworldband. Maloney and his family own the Mount Falcon resort in Mayo.
