Phillip Berber

Sandymount-born Philip Berber (56) sold his electronic trading company Cybercorp to Charles Schwab for $488m in 2000 and decided to give most of the money away, becoming a full-time philanthropist and social entrepreneur.

His charity A Glimmer Of Hope, run with his wife Donna, is active in east Africa. It has constructed more than 4,000 water projects, 335 school buildings and 170 health facilities, and distributed more than 17,000 micro-finance loans to help those living in rural Ethiopia. The Formula One racing fan has also made a large donation to UCD, which named an atrium after him in the business school.
