Maureen Wheeler

Belfast-born Maureen Wheeler helped reinvent travel writing, launching the incredibly successful Lonely Planet travel guides. In 2007, BBC Worldwide spent about €121m buying out Wheeler (65) and her husband Tony.

The Melbourne-based couple now work in philanthropy, with their foundation now supporting 60 projects to reduce poverty in developing countries, focusing on Southeast Asia, East Africa and Central America. They have recently invested in book publisher Text Publishing company and donated $5m for an opera tour to visit Melbourne.
