Former Tory party general election candidate Charles Gallagher (55) and his family own 72pc of Abbey, Ireland’s only stock market-quoted house builder.
Shares have risen, valuing the stake at around €171m. There was presumably some debt when they increased their stake ahead of a failed attempt to take it private in 2013. The Gallagher family also own the British building firm Matthew Homes which is valued at €93m. It has started to buy land and build houses again with gusto.
