Celebrities from the world of music, film and sport have made huge money over the last year boosted by mega endorsement contracts, enormously successful Hollywood blockbusters or a rather controversial music deal with Apple. Here are the top five from the Sunday Independent Rich List.

U2 €720m – down €95m.

U2’s collective wealth is down for a technical reason. Manager Paul McGuinness left and is now counted separately with his own €180m fortune. If he had stayed, the combined U2 fortune would be closer to €900m, boosted by a mega $100m marketing deal with Apple and the release of a new album. The start of a world tour has been delayed by Bono’s bike crash but that should see even more money flow in.

Roma Downey €270m up €10m

Derry born actress Roman Downey is best known for her role in the “Touched by an Angel” TV series in the 1990s. Now the Malibu based star is one half of one of the slickest reality TV production outfits in the world. Husband Mark Burnett helped create shows like Survivor, the Apprentice and Are you smarter than a 10 year old?

Liam Neeson €110m up €32m

We hiked up Neeson’s wealth estimates this year as he is proper Hollywood royalty and has been paid more than previously thought. There was a near €18m cheque for Taken 3. His movies ranging from Star wars- the Phantom Menace to Schindlers List and The Dark Night rises have grossed almost €2.5bn at the US box office.

Eddie Irvine €77m up €1m

Former Formula One driver and international playboy turned property developer Eddie Irvine has seen his wealth rise on the back of improving asset values. He has high end properties in the Bahamas, Florida and Dalkey. Irvine is the only person on the list to have fought off a shark.

Pierce Brosnan €52m down €1m

Navan’s very own secret agent, Pierce Brosnan helped revitalise the flagging James Bond franchise and was very handsomely paid for his four movies, netting around €35.8m. Altogether, his movies have taken €1.24bn at the US box office. His wealth dipped because of a major fire at his €8m Malibu home last month and a quiet year on the big screen.
