Retail sales rebound in April after poor performance in March due to weather

The volume of retail sales jumped by 1.5pc in April, an annual increase of 4.8pc, rebounding after poor figures for March.

According to the latest report from the Central Statistics Offices (CSO), the figures reflect an annual increase of 4.8pc.

Sales volumes were largely boosted by increasingly popular home improvements (Furniture & Lighting up 13.2pc) and larger heating costs after the cold start of the year (Fuel up 5.6pc).

Excluding motor sales, the volume of sales last month increased by 1pc compared to March 2018, an increase of 3.8pc annually.

Meanwhile, the largest drops in sales volumes were see across electrical goods (down 3pc) and in department stores (down 1pc).

The value of retail sales rose by 6.8pc in April 2018 compared with the previous month, an annual increase of 3.8pc.
