Repak urges fines for 'failing to recycle'
HOUSEHOLDS who fail to dispose of their recyclable waste properly should face stiff penalties – including having their transgressions captured on camera – according to a survey.
The MRBI survey, commissioned by Repak Recycling for Recycling Week this week, found that 52pc of respondents believe that those who fail to dispose of their recyclables properly should face stiff fines.
Half of respondents believe bin lorries should have cameras attached to them to expose culprits who contaminate dry recycling bins with inappropriate waste, or waste that is not properly disposed of or cleaned.
Meanwhile Repak, a not-for-profit recycling scheme, is urging householders to "recycle better" as close to one million green bins collected each year are contaminated and must be sent to landfill.
