Payrolls show smallest drop in two years
Irish payrolls fell at the slowest pace in two years in the third quarter, official figures released today show.
Payrolls fell 3.7pc from a year earlier, the smallest annual decrease since the third quarter of 2008, the Central Statistics Office said on its website.
That compares with an decline of 4.1pc in the previous three months. The total number of people employed was 1.852 million.
Employment in the building industry showed the biggest decline, with a 24pc fall in the year.
Employment in construction has fallen almost 58pc since peaking in 2007, today’s report showed.
The unemployment rate in the three months through September was 13.9pc, compared with 13.6pc in the previous quarter.
